When family fails you, you make your own. Marcellus learned that lesson a long time ago. His own seemed doomed from the start. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1810 to a female slave and her master - the Governor of Louisiana. Despite being a politician’s son, his race earned him no value as anything but a slave. But that was also a time when Marcel had not yet learned to not bite the hand that feeds you. Not when that same hand had a tendency to strike at the slightest of errors. Simply the act of staring too long could earn him a whipping. But the little boy was born with a spine and a fierce pride despite the discrimination he faced and the abuse at the hands of his own father. And it was that brashness, despite being a slave, that landed him on Niklaus Mikaelson’s radar on the day of his half-brother Emil’s funeral. He’d earned another whipping that day; for whatever insignificant reason, he barely remembers. But it was the straw that broke the camel’s back, because that day, the young slave had resisted, and struck his old man with an apple. That was when Klaus intervened; impressed by the bold act, and seeing himself in the boy; both bastard sons that had faced their fathers’ wrath. And so Klaus adopted Marcel and took him in as his own ward. Before this pivotal moment in time, Marcel’s individuality had not been recognized.
His mother had sworn to name him on the condition that he survived and yet she succumbed to fever and a premature death before it was possible. So it was Klaus who christened him ‘Marcellus’, meaning Little Warrior. He spend the remainder of his childhood and early adulthood with the Mikaelsons. But he’d always been aware of the glaring fact that this new family of his was by no means ordinary. He learned about vampires fairly early on, but never believed the bad reputation they got in the stories. Marcel didn’t know how something meant to be so evil was capable of granting him what his own human father had failed to provide.
After-all, when it came to no impulse control, humanity didn’t lag far behind. Rebekah was the one who brought it out of him the most; the beautiful, eternally youthful Mikaelson sister. Luckily for him, he knew the charge between them was entirely mutual. But it was only when he was able to best her in a fencing duel, that Marcel found the confidence to pursue his feelings for her. But Klaus was quick to forbid the budding romance. Still, if there was one lesson that Klaus himself had taught him, it was to fight for his wants - and Rebekah was near the top of that list. It didn’t last long. When he caught the lovers one day, Klaus daggered his own sister before his very eyes; giving Marcellus a cruel ultimatum: Undagger his beloved, or be granted eternity as a vampire.
Marcellus chose the latter. He remained with the Mikaelson family for the majority of the next century until he enlisted in the Army during World War I and was deployed to France until 1919. Fifty two years later, when Rebekah was finally undaggered, Marcel found that little had changed with respect to his feelings for her. Desperate to be together, the two resorted to a terrible measure. They summoned Klaus’ greatest fear, his own father -Mikael, the ‘Destroyer’. It remains one of the biggest regrets of his life. The Original Vampire; the hunter of other vampires, set fire to the city and chased out his offspring - including Rebekah, while Marcel was left to burn.
Hard as it was to believe, there is opportunity even in adversity. The Originals believed that Marcel was killed in Mikael’s purge of New Orleans. But then again, it wasn’t as though they bothered to come back and check. Besides, Klaus should have known better than to underestimate his own progeny. With the anonymity that came with presumed death, Marcel established a new beginning for himself without the Mikaelson family. Their absence left a power vacuum in the city’s supernatural community, which allowed him to eventually rise to power as the leader of the vampire faction. For the first time, the vampires in the Quarter were united under one name and one rule.
With this solidarity came much prosperity as they ascended to a state of power that was above any of the other species in the city, until eventually, Marcel became the new ‘King of the Quarter’; his rules extending to all of the supernatural species within it. And that was when the aptly named Little Warrior gained everything he’d ever fought for; family, loyalty, success. The taste of victory is sweetly addictive, and Marcel is determined to keep it. He has a zero-tolerance policy for any who disrespect his laws or undermine his rule. And it anyone takes the city away from him, it will have to be pried from his cold, dead hands.

PERSONALITY ⚘
ღ What makes you, you? ღ
As a human, Marcel is shown to be very brave as he fought back against the slave owner who whipped him, a gesture that earned him Klaus' respect and ultimately saved his life. Marcel was very moral, as he tried to stop another slave getting beaten which then resulted in Marcel getting shot by his own father. Back in his youth, Marcel was shown to be innocent; he was greatly disturbed when Kol decided to "educate" him about vampirism at the cost of several innocent lives.
Marcel can be described as being the life of the party. When he was introduced, Marcel was shown to apparently be diabolical and dangerous as well as wicked but has since proven himself to be even more moral than Klaus. Marcel is very charismatic and uses said charisma as much as his vampire powers to get what he wants from others. Marcel’s enjoys his vampiric life and likes living in the French Quarter, considering it to be a home to keep and fight for. He is also very brave, being one of the very few who can speak defiantly in Klaus' presence without worrying that he risks losing his own life in the process.
He takes his role as leader seriously and enforces the rules he made without fail, though he is not above getting carried away since he supposedly killed a witch in front of many viewers for this reason, though its revealed that said witch used magic and took part in the harvest ritual where she had her own daughter sent to her death. He also seems to genuinely care for his subordinates, having stayed at the side of one dying from Klaus' werewolf bite until the latter provided him with the cure.
After transitioning into an Upgraded Original Vampire, Marcel's attitude become quiet and subdued, whilst being angry and upset, having been betrayed by those he considered his family. No longer being a normal vampire, thus unkillable to the Mikaelsons, Marcel quickly adopts a more arrogant and confrontational nature, over his more pragmatic tendencies, doing what he feels is necessary regardless of the consequences.
