Stefan Salvatore was born on November 5, 1846 in the small town of Mystic Falls, VA. He and his brother, Damon who is 7 years older than him, were born to Giuseppe and Lillian Salvatore. Lillian Salvatore died of Consumtion when Stefan and Damon were young and they were raised by their father. Stefan and Damon were very close, best friends, until Katherine Pierce came to town and came between them. Katherine was a youngs girl whose family died in a fire and Giuseppe Salvatore agreed to take her in. Stefan and Damon both fell in love with Katherine. Stefan was the first one to fall for her when she came to live with them. When Damon came home from the war and met Katherine he quickly fell for her too. Then they both found out what she was, she compelled them to keep her secret. There was a plot to get rid of the vampires by the founding families and when Stefan and Damon tried to rescue Katherine they were both shot. Stefan didn't know it at the time but he had vampire blood in his system, Katherine had been compelling him to drink it for weeks, Damon had drank from her willingly and wanted her to turn him. Little did they know that it was their father that shot them both. They woke up in transition to becoming vampires and after Stefan killed their father by feeding on him to complete his transition into a vampire he then forced Damon to complete him transition as well. After that Damon vowed that he would give Stefan a lifetime of misery for his betrayal and they parted ways and did not see each other for a long time. So would begin their love/hate relationship and they both stayed away from Mystic Falls for a very long time.
After turning into a vampire, killing his own father and betraying his brother, Stefan was feeling extreme guilt and basically wanted to die so he turned off that part of himself, the human part, the part that can feel. One night, Stefan went to a camp where the war-wounded lay, and discreetly fed on their blood. It was there that he spotted a girl in the shadows and tried to attack and feed on her. She drove Stefan to the ground and turned out to be another, much older vampire by the name of Alexia Branson. Lexi did not have a daylight ring, like himself so Stefan brought her home with him, where she found corpses drained of blood lying everywhere. Lexi told Stefan that there are good parts of being a vampire and there are bad parts, and that he was the bad parts. He was a ripper. Determined to change that, she worked with him and helped him to see that everything was heightened for a vampire, pain and suffering were more intensified for a vampire but love was too. Love is what makes life worth living. Over the course of many decades, Lexi became Stefan's mentor, best friend and companion, and she showed Stefan the 'good parts' of being a vampire; how to live compassionately and reclaim the caring, empathetic person Stefan had been as a human. From 1864 to 1912, Stefan lived on a strict animal blood diet and no longer fed on human blood.
In 1912 Stefan returned to Mystic to attend the funeral of his half nephew Zachariah. He hadn't seen Damon in almost fifty years but he wanted to apologize and make things right between him and his brother. At first Damon was resistant to see Stefan but he soon came around. Later, Damon tried to persuade a very resistant Stefan to have a drink of human blood with him again, selecting Marianna Lockwood and luring her away from the crowd. Stefan fed on her, but quickly lost control of himself and accidentally ripped her head off, astonishing both of them. Out of extreme guilt and remorse, Stefan irrationally apologized and tried to put her head back onto her body. Stefan, angry with Damon for forcing him to drink human blood, refused Damon's offer to help him learn to control it, then ran off into the woods. Damon watched him go, concerned for his brother's well-being, though not enough to pursue him. After drinking human blood in 1912, Stefan fell off the wagon and returned to his former Ripper lifestyle. He then became the Ripper of Monterey.
After Mexico, Stefan traveled to Chicago in 1922. It was there that he frequented a particular speakeasy, and one day caught the eye of a beautiful blonde, Rebekah. She initially resisted his interest, but they soon became romantically involved.Stefan eventually met Rebekah's older half-brother, Nik. At first, Nik disliked Stefan because of his relationship with Rebekah. As time went on, however, they bonded over their similar family histories, as well as Stefan's penchant for petty cruelty toward humans, and became best friends who enjoyed each other's company immensely. The three of them frequently partied together at the speakeasy, enjoying booze, blood and dancing all night long.
On one such night of revelry, the club was attacked by what appeared to be the police. Discovering that the police were using wooden bullets, Stefan realized they knew there were vampires inside. He sensed Rebekah's panic when she responded cryptically "He's here," but before he could find anything out, Nik compelled Stefan to forget about him and Rebekah. In a rush to leave Rebekah dropped her necklace that her mother had given her. Stefan saw the necklace and picked it up, observing it carefully. A detective then approached him, showed him a sketch of Nik and Rebekah and asked if he had ever seen them before. Stefan told him what he believed to be the truth: that he had never seen those people before in his life. He would later give that same necklace to Elena, a girl that he would later meet and fall in love with.
In 2009 and it had been 15 years since Stefan had been home or had seen his brother Damon. Stefan initially came home to visit his nephew Zach and to see his home but at that time he ended up saving a girl, who happened to look just like Katherine the woman who turned them into vampires. He was planning on leaving town but he found that he couldn't because he had to know who she was and why she looked like Katherine.
A lot has happened to Stefan in the time that he decided to come home. He met and fell in love with Elena, he lost Lexi, he turned off his humanity to save his brother and he also helped Elena deal with being a vampire and then she broke up with him to be with Damon.
It took Stefan awhile before he was okay with Elena choosing Damon and then he found out from Klaus that there might be a cure for being a vampire, there could be a cure for Elena. In the process of searching for the cure Jeremy was killed. At first Elena didn't realize that even though he was wearing his ring he would not wake up. When she did realize that he truly was dead she broke down and Damon told her to turn off her emotions. Stefan knew it was a bad idea and that they needed the cure now more than ever. It took some time but Damon and Stefan finally convinced Elena to turn her humanity back on.
It was now graduation day but the veil to tho other side had been dropped so now every supernatural being that had unfinished business was now in Mystic Falls. So Bonnie had to work on getting the veil back up and in the process if doing that she brought Jeremy back to life but then she herself died.
Then the Travelers came and tried to take over the town, Stefan was killed when his heart was ripped out by a traveler that had overtaken Tyler's body, Damon and Elena drove Damon's car into the grill to cause an explosion to kill all the Travelers that were gathered by Liz Forbes. Everyone was brought back to life but Damon and Bonnie. Stefan tried to find out what happened to Damon and Bonnie but every lead he had ended up a dead end. So he gave up and left Mystic Falls to start over. Elena fell apart and had Alaric compel away her memories of loving Damon. Vampires still could not enter Mystic Falls due to the Travelers spell.
Eventually, Damon found his way back thanks to Bonnie but he came back to find that the woman that he loved, Elena Gilbert, had his best friend, Alaric Saltzman, compel her to forget that she ever loved him. Stefan and Caroline were trying to repair their friendship and then her mother got sick and Stefan knew he had to be there for her. The more time that he spent with her he realized that he was falling for her and while they were at her parents cabin, preparing it for her mom to come spend her final days there, they kissed and he knew for sure then that there was something between them. Then Caroline's mother passed away. Bonnie found her way out of the prison world and then things went from bad to worse.
Caroline could not deal with the pain of losing her mother so she turned off her humanity and when Stefan tried to get her to turn it back on she retaliated by kidnapping Sarah, his niece that he was keeping a secret, and threatened to kill her unless Stefan turned off his humanity too. He tried to save Sarah but when he realized that he couldn't he did the only thing he could to save her and turned off his humanity. Stefan and Caroline then started a killing spree all over the campus of Whitmore College. Then Damon found out that their mother was still alive and Damon, Elena, Bonnie and Kai all went to the prison world to get her so she could get Stefan to flip his switch back on.
They found Stefan and Caroline at Scull bar and Lily got Stefan to turn his humanity back on and in turn Stefan was able to get Caroline to turn her humanity back on. Bonnie brought back the cure and gave it to Damon for Elena but he wasn't sure he wanted to give it to her but he ended up giving it to her anyway and Elena became human again and she got all her memories back that Alaric had compelled away. Alaric and Jo were getting married. Damon was best man and Elena was Maid of Honor. Then tragedy struck when Kai showed up and killed Jo and then caused an explosion that injured a lot of people including Elena, who now was human, Damon tried to feed her his blood but she wouldn't wake up so he rushed her to the hospital.
They found out that Elena was under a sleeping spell and would not wake up until Bonnie died because Kai linked their lives together. Stefan was trying to make a truce between his mother, her band of heretics and the town. So he made a deal with Lily that they would leave her and her family alone as long as they got time to clear out the town. Now not only did they have to contend with Lily and her heretics but now Caroline found out that she is now pregnant with the twins that are Jo's and Alaric's. The Gemini coven did a spell to transfer the twins into Caroline's body. After getting over the initial shock Stefan was by Caroline's side through all of this. Until Rayna Cruz showed up.
Rayna was a hunter that was supernatural and when she stabbed you with her sword the vampire's soul was transferred into the stone where you would live out the worse things you ever did over and over again. It was your hell. Caroline was having a C-section because the babies were trying to siphon the magic from her and it was killing her. As the doctors were working on getting the babies out Rayna Cruz came after Beau, who was a member of Lily's heretics, and she killed him and then went after every vampire there. She was fighting with Damon when Stefan stepped in and was marked by her sword and now went on the run from her.
Stefan didn't want to endanger Caroline and the babies so he left and went on the run for three years as his brother laid down in a coffin beside Elena's coffin and he gave strict instructions not to wake him up until Elena was awake. After 3 years Stefan had to wake up Damon because he needed his help.
Stefan and Damon finally defeated Rayna and then they found out what was in the vault. Damon and Enzo went into the vault and were overtaken by what was in there. Stefan, Caroline and Bonnie with Alaric's help started figuring out what had control over Damon and Enzo. It was a Siren and the Devil, whose name was Cade. Damon and Stefan made a deal with Cade to work for him and bring him the souls of the worse people on earth but in order to do that Stefan had to flip his humanity switch. He did some horrible things in that time but the worse thing was killing Enzo. Stefan decided that he needed to go and kill Elena to get Damon back on track but Bonnie had moved her body to a cabin so when Stefan went there he killed Enzo and he was about to kill Bonnie when she stabbed him with a syringe of Elena's blood and turned him human.
Now Stefan was human and was trying to atone for all the bad things he had ever done. With help from Damon and Caroline, Stefan killed Cade and destroyed Hell or so they thought. He wanted a life with Caroline but he didn't want to burden her with all of his collateral damage so he was going to leave until Damon convinced him he should stay. Then they found out that Hell was not destroyed and that Katherine had taken over so now they needed to kill her.

ღ As a human, Stefan was compassionate, kind, noble, honorable, intelligent, athletic, responsible, academic, dutiful, and a gentleman. He was definitely seen as the 'Golden Boy' and he had the admiration and respect of the entire town of Mystic Falls and most of all, of his father Giuseppe. Stefan was also seen to be ambitious and studious and he desired to become a doctor during his human life and this was his profession or career of choice before he was turned into a vampire against his will. In his human years, when it came to love and romance, Stefan was liked, admired by and popular with women. He was seen to be chivalrous, gallant, romantic, well-mannered, courteous and polite, traits which made Katherine Pierce fall deeply for the younger Salvatore.
In regards to Katherine, Stefan was much harder to get and challenging unlike Damon, who persistently chased and pursued Katherine as much as possible. Unlike Damon, Stefan had a very close relationship with his father Giuseppe and Stefan was Giuseppe's favorite son. Stefan was also close with his mother, before she had died when he was 10 years old. Before turning into a vampire in 1864, Stefan was seen to be happy, optimistic, light-hearted, playful, mischievous and naive. He was also seen as athletic, dutiful, respectful, intelligent, scholarly, noble, chivalrous and even-tempered. Stefan was very close to his older brother Damon growing up. Although Stefan was very popular and had many male friends during his human life, Stefan always considered Damon to be his best friend and companion. Stefan was also a bit idealistic when it came to love and romance, even naive at times. This is evident in Stefan when he very quickly and easily became infatuated and fell in love with Katherine Pierce, which is evidence of his youthfulness, naivety and simplicity as a regular teenage human. Although Stefan was only 17 years old, he displayed maturity, responsibility and had a wisdom beyond his years. Because of this, Stefan always seemed to be much older than his actual age.
As a vampire, Stefan's personality became increasingly complex. Much of Stefan's personality as a human transcended into his vampire personality, although his basic human traits became significantly more heightened. Although Stefan became increasingly darker by nature due to his vampire nature, he still retained the same basic personality traits that he had as a human.
